That's a very interesting question. I don't have the answere to it, but I can confirm that it can be so. But it doesn't have to be a partner, it can be any person that is important for oneself. For example, I have a brother who has a disease that breaks down/kills his muscles.. which slowly is taking away his ability to walk, carry things, and it also makes his heart weaker and weaker. I would take over that disease if I could. And I'm not just saying that. I mean it.
I'd do it because I love him. I do not want to see him suffer. The knowledge that he is in pain, makes me feel pain too. I feel guilty that I'm not the one that is sick.
It might be the guilt, that it's very hard to deal with, that makes me want to take over his suffering. Maybe I'm selfish. I'd rather feel physical pain than feel this guilt.
